Privacy Policy
Baul is a self-paced kanji practice app for iPhone and iPad. There is no lesson or learning module — you choose a JLPT deck and practice on your own. This page explains what information the app uses and what stays on your device.
Summary
Baul does not require an account and does not collect a user profile. Progress, settings, and the last session you resume from Home are stored locally on your device. Apple processes the Baul Pro Lifetime purchase. Stroke-order diagrams are loaded from KanjiVG when you use writing practice.
Information we collect
- On your device: seen, learned, and practiced kanji; practice preferences such as shuffle, labels, readings, font size, appearance, voice playback, and writing outline; and the last flashcard or writing session for the Continue tile.
- Purchases: Apple handles Baul Pro Lifetime through StoreKit 2. Baul receives entitlement status only. It never sees your payment card details.
- Stroke-order diagrams: when you open stroke order, the app downloads kanji SVG files from KanjiVG on GitHub’s raw content service. Those requests are for the diagram only.
- Voice playback: readings are spoken with Apple’s on-device speech synthesis. Audio is not uploaded.
- Example sentences shown in flashcards are bundled with the app.
How we use information
- To save progress and preferences across flashcards, writing practice, and free writing.
- To unlock N3–N1 decks and writing practice after a Baul Pro purchase or restore.
- To show kanji, readings, examples, and stroke-order diagrams.
- To play Japanese readings when Voice Playback is turned on in Settings.
Analytics, advertising, and tracking
Baul does not include advertising SDKs. It does not intentionally collect analytics or track you across apps and websites.
This policy page is hosted as a static site on GitHub Pages. GitHub may process standard web request data under its own terms when you open the page in a browser.
Sharing and disclosure
- Baul does not sell personal information.
- Local practice data is not shared with third parties except as needed for the app to work.
- App Store purchases follow Apple’s privacy policy.
- KanjiVG diagrams are retrieved from GitHub when you use writing practice.
Attribution
Stroke-order diagrams use data from KanjiVG, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0.
Data retention
- Local practice data stays on your device until you reset progress in Settings or delete the app.
- Removing the app also removes that locally stored data from the device.
Children’s privacy
Baul is a practice app and is not directed at children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, email the developer so it can be reviewed.
